Background of the Study
Sales staff training is a crucial element in the success of retail businesses, as it directly impacts the quality of customer service and overall business performance. Effective sales staff training programs provide employees with the skills and knowledge needed to handle customer inquiries, manage sales transactions, improve product knowledge, and enhance customer satisfaction (Emeka & Chidozie, 2023). In Katsina State, supermarkets are playing an increasingly vital role in the retail sector, catering to diverse consumer needs and competing with other retail outlets in the region. However, despite the growing importance of sales staff in shaping customer experiences and driving sales, many supermarkets in the state lack robust training programs for their employees (Abubakar & Shehu, 2023).
Training is often limited to short-term product knowledge sessions or basic sales techniques, which may not sufficiently equip staff to handle the complexities of modern retail environments. The fast-paced nature of the retail industry, coupled with changing consumer expectations and competitive pressures, underscores the need for continuous and targeted training for sales staff (Sule & Danjuma, 2024). This study aims to assess the impact of sales staff training on the performance of supermarkets in Katsina State, focusing on its role in improving customer service, sales performance, and overall business profitability.
Statement of the Problem
Supermarkets in Katsina State face significant challenges in optimizing their sales operations, with customer service being one of the most critical factors influencing customer retention and sales growth. Many supermarkets fail to invest in comprehensive and ongoing sales staff training programs, resulting in poorly trained employees who struggle to meet customer expectations, manage customer complaints, and maximize sales opportunities (Ali & Saeed, 2024). This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of sales staff training programs and their impact on the performance of supermarkets in Katsina State.
